Background of Clubs Formation

The Owen Roe Leckpatrick club is located in north Tyrone (Click HERE for parish map and townland names and meanings) in the Parish of Leckpatrick.

The first appearance of the GAA in Leckpatrick parish was in 1920, and the newly appointed curate, Fr Tom Bradley, was chief instigator. The Clochcor Emmets were duly entered into the Strabane and District league in 1920 and 1921. The creation of the Border at the end of that year and the serious security situation in the North of Ireland led to the collapse of the league and the disappearance of the club.

1934 was the next year a team in the Parish was formed, going by the name St.Mary's Glenmornan. The St Mary's team were registered in the North Tyrone League in 1934-35. Once again the failure of the local league led to a rapid collapse and a gap of 10 yrs followed until the next Leckpatrick team were registered and from 1945-48 they were affiliated to the West Tyrone Board. Falling numbers led to amalgamation with Strabane in 1948 and the break up of the local club.

In 1963 the Leckpatrick Pearse Og club were entered into the North Tyrone minor and juvenile leagues with Danny Devine and Patsy Kelly providing the initial leadership. With both the minor and juvenile teams winning the North Tyrone championship the club decided to enter a junior team in the West Tyrone league. The team won promotion to Intermediate in 1964, however surpassing that the Minor and Juvenile teams each won their respective county championships, with the help of a number of players from the Dunamanagh parish. A number of players from these teams went on to play for Tyrone minors in 1964 and 1965.

Success did not follow at Adult level however and by the end of the decade the club had reached a crossroads. Despite reaching the Intermediate finals in 1967 and 1969 there was a very small player pool and at the 1969 club convention it was agreed that an amalgamation with Dunamanagh was the way forward. The Eoghain Rua club was formed and in February 1970 the county board gave it's blessing to the new club. Tony Kelly and Dan McDermott were given the task of leading the club.

In it's first year the club won the Intermediate League and Championship and secured it's spot in Senior football for the 1971 season.

In the next few years the club continued their efforts at youth level and were rewarded with a Senior county championship Final in 1975. The game against Trillick was a tense affair but after a number of key players were injured the final swung Trillick's way.

In the years to follow a lot of focus was placed on the Championship but to no avail and spirits began to drop. By the end of 1978 the club were relegated into Div 2 of the senior league. With the Aughabrack and later the Dunamanagh players now forming their own clubs the future seemed uncertain.

In 1980 the Eoghain Rua club lost in the intermediate championship final replay but went on to win the Intermediate league title in 1981 and thus gained promotion back to Senior level. This was a short lived promotion and relegation soon followed. The club remained in the Intermediate grade until 1985 when a play-off with Drumquin resulted in relegation to junior football.

Off the playing field in May 1987 the club successfully opened Pairc an Ghleanna, the new playing field in Glenmornan. Considerable effort was made by the club committee in the previous 3 years to raise the necessary finance to make this possible. Temporary changing rooms were also opened with a view to developing a more permanent structure in the years ahead.

Back on the playing fields the youth development was paying dividends, through underage teams and then into reserve and senior grades. All these effort culminated in promotion to Div 2 in 1998.

Another major development has been the establishment of a ladies football team within the club and their participation in Tyrone Leagues. Kieran Kelly provided the initial leadership with an active committee led by Gina Devine. Is is hoped that others can take over where they left off and develop more fully that aspect of the club promotion. Another landmark was the development of new clubrooms and changing facilities. The club rooms in Glenmornan were officially opened on Friday 11th December 1998 by Seosamh MacDonncha, the then President of the GAA. A large number of people have contributed to the continued support of Gaelic games and Irish heritage in the Parish of Leckpatrick and in the neighboring areas.

In 2008 the club planned and completed a huge development which included replacing their current playing field and building a brand new training pitch. This development which reopened in the summer of 2010 leaves Pairc an Ghleanna as one of the counties most modern facilities which plans on the horizon for further development.

The present day club, it's officials and players are deeply indebted to all who have gone before and sown the seeds as well as tilling the soil - go raibh a mile maith agaibh.
