Owen Roe’s Clinch Tyrone ACL Division 3 title
The Owen Roe’s Senior team had been on a 13 game winning streak up until Sunday last and game number 14 against Newtownstewart saw them continue that streak as well as win the Division 3 League title and gain promotion to Intermediate football for 2018!
After suffering relegation to Division 3 in 2005 the Club has fought and struggled hard to get back up, had set backs and disappointment such as losing out in promotion play-offs but Sunday’s win saw that struggle get its reward.
Newtownstewart were lying in close second on the League table and a win for them would have seen them closing the chase on the Leckpatrick side for the title but it wasn’t to be. After Newtown got 2 points up in the opening minutes, the Roe’s men settled and levelled with points from Michael Dooher and Conal Mc Cormack. Then a good piece of defending by Stephen Kelly found Ryan Mc Aleer to send to the net to give a cushion. Newtown pointed again but 2 more points from Ronan Mc Nulty and Dooher again sent Owen Roe’s in at half time 1-04 to 0-03,
Newtown again opened the account after the whistle from a pointed free but Owen Roe’s stretched their advantage with 2 more points from sub Stephen Harper and corner back Gerard Devine. Newtown tagged on another point from play but from here on in to the last whistle it was to be Owen Roe’s who kept the scoreboard moving. A point from Seamus Dooher and another from a free from Cathal Mc Shane took the points tally to 8 but sub Gerard Mc Shane was to have the last say when a deft flick from Mark O’Neill found Mc Shane to finish to the net deep into injury time.
Final score: Owen Roe’s 2-08 Newtownstewart 0-05
A big well done to all the players and to the management for their hard work and achievement in getting the Club back to Intermediate football. A big thank you also to all who help out in the background, to our sponsors and supporters and last but definitely not least to the players and management’s partners. This is a win for all of you too!!!
