With the Owen Roe’s Reserves suffering defeat at the hands of their visitors it’s was up to the Seniors to make amends in front of a large home crowd.
The Leckpatrick side sprung out of the traps, notching up a quick 2 point lead through Tony Devine and Conor O’Neill, before Devine raced through from midfield and found the Greencastle net. Sean Dooher extended the lead to 6 points before the visitors got their opening score from a well taken free.
O’Neill quickly cancelled it with another point from the home side’s kickout then tagged on another from a free to stretch their tally to 8 points. Greencastle settled and pickled off another 2 but Ronan Mc Nulty found the distance for his first of the day. The St Patrick’s side pointed again before Sean Dooher doubled his tally just before half-time leaving the Roe’s going to the changing rooms on 1-07 to 0-04.
Stephen Harper picked off a point to open the second half but Greencastle were applying the pressure and making the hosts fight for all they could get. Their pressure paid off, seeing them pick off 3 unanswered points in the first 10 minutes, but Gerard Mc Shane was to aid in putting the game almost out of reach for them. Mc Shane fetched a fine ball from the air on the 45, then picked out sub Oisin Dooher in space in front of goal. Dooher saw his chance but the Greencastle keeper did well to deny him his goal. However the alert Conor O’Neill got a hand to the rebounded save to give the Leckpatrick side their second goal of the day. The Roe’s saw their opening and scored 4 unanswered points through O’Neill (2), Ryan Mc Aleer and Brendan Boggs.
Greencastle still kept testing the home defence and could have narrowed the gap twice only for Andy Devine to pull off a good save and full back Aidan Christy to make a timely interception seconds later to deny them goals. At the other end Stephen Harper all but sealed it with a goal in the 29th minute but the game wasn’t quite up yet and deep into injury time referee Stephen Campbell awarded Greencastle a penalty, which was neatly tucked away under Devine’s reach, leaving it 3-12 to 1-07 for the Roe’s.
This Sunday both the Reserves and Seniors are away to Cookstown (to be confirmed at time of writing) and all support for the 2 teams would be appreciated!
