The Owen Roe’s Reserve side had found the going tough over the last few weeks but showed commendable spirit to make the long trip to Cookstown on Saturday evening and come down the road with both points, especially considering that at one stage they found themselves 7 points in arrears.
Eamon McBride opened the game's scoring on 30 seconds with Cookstown levelling up. The Father Rocks’ then took control of the game with two goals in a four minute spell either side of a Ryan McShane placed kick.
Both sides traded scores once more with Ruairi Boylan on target for Owen Roe’s.
It got better for the O'Neill’s shortly after as they hit their first major. Ryan McShane's run ended up with Art Anderson goaling.
The final ten minutes of the half saw Owen Roe’s outscore Cookstown 3 to 2 with McShane's placed kick on target for all three scores as the east Tyrone side took a 2-5 to 1-6 advantage into the break.
The away side continued to claw their way back at the start of the second half and again it was McShane on form as he converted two placed balls in a row.
Nonetheless the Father Rocks’ were still keen on the points as they rattled off a trio of white flags on the spin.
Back, though, came Owen Roe’s and the McBrides, Sean and Eamon, combined to send McShane in on goal to tie things up with a major.
McShane and Niall McAleer nosed Owen Roe’s ahead but Cookstown replied once more.
Both sides were battling to take control with Timothy O'Doherty, Conor Doherty, Peter O'Flaherty and co in the Roe’s back-line making some timely interventions to help maintain that one point advantage.
With the defence holding tight, McAleer from the angle, and Paul Devine clipped Owen Roe’s clear in the embers of the game with the home-side replying to leave two in it.
With Cookstown hunting for a goal the O'Neill’s needed an insurance point and with the pressure on, the ball came to the ever reliable feet of Liam McCay who sent the ball over the bar with the angle against him to seal the points for Owen Roe’s.
