Owen Roe’s 2-14 Clogher 2-16 (Seniors)
With the Owen Roe’s Reserves accounting for their Clogher counterparts, hopes were high that the Seniors would give a good account of themselves in their fixture. Played with a stiff wind blowing down the pitch it was Clogher, playing against the breeze, who made the better start with Clogher’s Marc Tierney booming over the opening score. Gerard Mc Shane and Conor O’Neill quickly cancelled it out but a misjudged kickout from the Roe’s keeper fell into the hands of the visitors who promptly chipped past the back tracking Devine, giving the Éire Ógs an early boost. Harper and Marc Mc Connell traded points before the hosts found their groove. Points from Tony Devine, 2 from O’Neill and another from Niall Mc Aleer levelled matters by the end of the first quarter. Clogher went 2 ahead again just before the Roe’s were dealt another blow with the sending off of defender Gerard Devine. The hosts however were the side less fazed and 3 more points from O’Neill and Conall Mc Cormick either side of a pointed free from the Clogher keeper, Rory Mc Elroy, sent the hosts in at half-time with 1 point advantage at 0-10 to 1-06.
Now on 14 men and playing into the wind, it was the Roe’s who got on the scoreboard first. A neat pass from O’Neill found Cathal Mc Shane who rattled the Clogher net, quickly followed up by a Tony Devine point. If the hosts thought they were going to have it all their way, Clogher had other ideas. Four unanswered points from Barry Mc Kenna, Michael Mc Caughey, Mc Connell and Ryan Mc Caughey and a goal quickly put them back in control. Another O’Neill free narrowed it to 1 but again Clogher replied before another twist from sub Ronan Mc Nulty, who was not long introduced, found the net for the Leckpatrick side. Two more pointed frees from O’Neill stretched it to a 3 point game for the hosts with time ticking down the clock. Clogher however had a different plan for the outcome and in a game of tos and fros it was they who were to finish the stronger, rattling off 5 unanswered scores to take away a 2 point victory and another 2 League points, stretching their campaign to 3 unbeaten games.
The Owen Roe’s lads should take heart from their performance however as they never gave up the fight, playing three quarters of the game a man down into a strong wind in the second half, they made life hard for Clogher. This Saturday they are at home again to Cookstown with throw-ins at 3.30 for the Reserves and 5pm for the Seniors.
