Owen Roe’s 1-10 Cookstown 0-10 (Seniors)
The corresponding Senior fixture was a mid-table clash and after losing out to Clogher last Sunday, Owen Roe’s were determined to pick up 2 League points over their east Tyrone opponents.
Cookstown opened the scoring 5 minutes after referee Stephen Mc Namee threw in the ball. Niall Mc Aleer levelled before Cookstown again replied. Scores were at a premium, with only these 3 registered 24 minutes in to the game. Owen Roe’s were doing their best to punch a hole in the Fr Rocks’ defence but just weren’t getting the breaks and it was only a high ball floated in over the defenders’s heads by Tony Devine that finally gave the Roe’s the score they after, Cathal Mc Shane rising highest to send the ball to the net. Ryan Mc Shane stretched the lead but Cookstown pinned one back with minutes remaining to half-time, these proving to be the busiest for the scorekeeper, with Mc Aleer Devine and Cathal Mc Shane giving the Roe’s a 5 point lead at the whistle.
Half-time: Owen Roe’s 1-05 Cookstown 0-03
Stephen Harper got on the scoresheet with his opening point 4 minutes into the second half, but for all the possession the Leckpatrick side had in this opening spell it was the visitors who were the more productive, puling 4 points back. Cathal Mc Shane and Conor O’Neill pointed either side of a Cookstown score with third from Ryan Mór Devine steadying things for the hosts on 20 minutes. Cookstown were still posing threats however and only for some stout defending from the Owen Roe’s back 7, they could have eaten in the slender Roe’s lead. A further point from the Fr Rocks was going to see the game go to the wire but Ryan Mc Aleer popped out of defence to put some breathing space in matters again with the visitors getting the last score of the day, not enough however to outdo the Leckpatrick desire for some much needed League points.
This Friday night the Seniors are away to Newotwnstewart with throw-in at 7.15pm with the Reserves meeting the same opposition on Sunday at 2.15pm.
