Owen Roe’s Reserves made the short trip across parish boundaries on Sunday last when they were away to Strabane.
Strabane opened the score sheet with a point within 3 minutes. Moments later at the other end of the field, Owen Roe’s veteran Ronan Parker won a ball and headed for goal. For some reason, Parker hesitated, waiting for a whistle from the referee, and missed his chance of goal. The ball fell to the alert Paul Devine but the referee had already spotted a late laul on Parker, promptly awarding a penalty. Parker duly stepped up to take the placed ball, which was initially well saved by the Sigerson’s keeper but Parker was quicker to the rebound and finished to the net on the second attempt. Ryan Devine added a point, quickly cancelled by a point from the Strabane full-forward. Peter Kirk and Parker again put 4 in it but a well struck shot by the Strabane number 11 was well saved by Art Anderson in the Leckpatrick nets. An in-form Parker picked off another point before Strabane began applying more pressure upfront, their 2 efforts at goals well cleared by the Roe’s backs and some bad luck seeing their efforts at points go astray. Paul Devine was unfortunate to see his attempt at palming a high ball into the Strabane net go just wide but a vintage Parker was putting in a youthful display, when he slipped behind his marker and collected a fine pass from Oran Roddy. A dummy from Parker put off the Strabane keeper letting Parker find Ricki Devine in space who palmed to the net for the visitors second goal to close out the first half 0-02 to 2-04 to the Roe’s.
Parker posted his third of the day on the restart but the game was about to take on a new life within minutes. Strabane pointed again but then a high ball into the Roe’s square found Kyle Devine who coolly palmed the ball in past Anderson. Within a minute, Strabane duplicated things when the same tactic paid off, again Kyle Devine the scorer. Another Strabane point narrowed it to the minimum and only for a few good clearances from Anderson, they may well have taken the lead. With the wind in their faces and Strabane closing in, the Leckpatrick side made some changes, with Michael Dooher and Pearse Devine coming off the bench. A sustained period of intense pressure on the Strabane net was getting nowhere with several shots well cleared by the hosts until Parker finally found his range again with 2 pointed frees, either side of the introductions of Marty O’Neill and Conor Donaghey. Then came Owen Roe’s third goal, a well taken strike from sub Pearse Devine, putting 6 points in it. Strabane hit back with a point with time ticking away and a late, late penalty was converted by Strabane to leave it a 2 point win for Owen Roe’s.
