Roe’s strong start to the season at Reserve level continued on Sunday past when
they accounted for Newtownstewart at Pairc Naomh Eoghain. The Leckpatrick
outfit had the spade work done in the first half where they chalked up a 0-9 to
no score lead.
The visitors struggled to settle in the opening throes of the contest with a Mark O’Neill free eventually settling them down on 10 minutes. Ryan ‘Ricki’ Devine notched up two from play with Ryan ‘Mór’ Devine booming over from distance as Owen Roe’s took control.
Two more Mark O’Neill dead balls either side of a Mór Devine point stretched the Roe’s lead with Conn Tinney being denied a goal by a good double stop by the Newtown keeper.
Owen Roe’s finished the half well with Clarke Stephenson fisting over and O’Neill once more in range from a dead ball.
As in the first half the opening notch on the scoring column for Owen Roe’s came from a Mark O’Neill free. Davy Harte left his corner back berth to send over a long range effort minutes later before Newtownstewart got their first score via a free.
However any hope of a comeback was quelled seconds later as Tinney reacted well to Sean Dooher’s ball across the goal to finish sharply to the rigging.
O’Neill from another placed kick extended the lead, with the hosts pulling 0-2 back. Ryan Mór Devine added another two to his tally, one from the fist and one from the boot as the game ebbed towards its conclusion. However at the other end Art Anderson was keen on a clean sheet as he made a brave save at the feet of a St Eugene’s attacker late on.
Newtonstewart got their final score with 5 minutes remaining but great interplay between Ricki Devine and Ruairi Kelly saw Tinney point, and late on Liam Mc Cay took on the placed kicking role and added another to the tally from long distance.
