Coalisland proved too strong a challenge for Championship debutants Owen Roes in this quarter final Junior B encounter played in Carrickmore on Sunday.
The East Tyrone ladies took control from the off, and only some smart goalkeeping by Owen Roes stopper Clodagh Devine prevented a goal in the opening minute. However the score board did not take long to start turning with wing back Emma McShane getting the first point of the day for Coalisland.
Devine made another smart save on 9 minutes, but was powerless to prevent Niamh Hughes’ rebound from finding the net. Laura McNally, Eithne O’Neill and Emma McErlean all split the posts, but the Championship new comers were defending gamely with Hannah Corry, and Miranda Doherty thwarting several Coalisland forays.
Further scores from the Coalisland forward unit took the game away from a spirited Leckpatrick outfit that had something to cheer when a nice move involving Seanin O’Neill, Aine Sharkey and Michelle Christy resulted in the latter knocking over to end the half.
Any hopes of an Owen Roes comeback evaporated early on with a trio of early strikes including one from ex County minor Hughes. The North Tyrone ladies however kept plugging away and received some reward when forward forays from Hannah Corry and Christy split the posts.
This was Coalisland’s day, and they head for the semi finals and a meeting with Strabane ladies. For the Owen Roes ladies they showed glimpses of what’s needed to compete at this level, and their task will be to interweave these glimpses into full performances.
Note: Coalisland were deemed to have fielded an illigal player after this fixture, and as such Owen Roes were awarded the tie.
