Owen Roe’s Ladies Minor team travelled to Killyclogher last Saturday to take on Rock in the Grade 4 League final and came away with a draw after a tight, low scoring game, which could easily have gone either way in the last few minutes. This was the first time a ladies side from Owen Roes had reached a County decider.
The Leckpatrick side opened the scoring with a point from Laura Devine but Rock fought back with a point of their own. They could however have extended their lead when a goal bound shot was blocked down bravely by Tara Donaghey. Ciara Mc Nulty however extended the Roe’s lead at the other end shortly with a well struck point but Rock kept on the pressure only to see their efforts go wide on a number of occasions, with Roe’s keeper, Naomh Barr, pulling off a good save to again deny Rock. Rock were awarded a free and the subsequent pass resulted in a clearance from the Roe’s goal line. The first half ended to 0-02 to 0-01 in favour of the Leckpatrick side.
The second half started nervously with both sides kicking wides but again Rock kept the pressure on the Roe’s rearguard when another goal attempt was cleared by Tara Donaghey, only to fall to Rock to kick over the bar to level matters. Rock now got the upperhand with another two points from play.
Chloe Mc Cafferty came on for Shakyra Kelly with Caoimhe Barr coming on for Gemma Coyle. Naomh Barr made a good save in the air denying Rock a point and the ball was moved quickly upfield for Laura Devine to score her second point to narrow things to a point again.
Rock again attacked and pinned on another point to put 2 in it again. Roe’s fought back and a long range point from Chloe Devine followed by another by Emer Mc Aleer levelled the match going into the 10 minutes. With neither side looking like giving in, the game entered injury time. Rock again pointed but then came 2 periods of injury time. When play resumed it was all to play for. Chloe Mc Cafferty had a good shot on goal denied by the crossbar and another shot at the Rock goal was cleared. Owen Roe’s Chloe Devine however got another point from play to level the match shortly before the referee blew for full time, with a draw being a fair result for two teams who served up an exciting game of football and they must meet again to decide who takes the spoils!
